Car Jump Start
Car battery flat? Contact RoadAssist for mobile jump-start assistance at your location, subject to technician availability.
About this service
A vehicle that will not start may have a discharged battery or another electrical problem. Our team can arrange an initial assessment and jump-start assistance where suitable. A successful jump start does not confirm that the battery or charging system is healthy.
Understanding this roadside service
When a vehicle will not start
A weak or discharged 12-volt battery is one possible reason a car refuses to start, but it is not the only reason. The starter motor, alternator, wiring, immobiliser or fuel system can produce symptoms that resemble a battery problem. A roadside assessment begins with the symptoms rather than assuming a jump start will solve every no-start condition.
If the dashboard lights illuminate but the engine turns slowly, the battery may be unable to deliver enough current. Rapid clicking can also point to low available power or a poor electrical connection. If the engine cranks normally but will not fire, a jump start may not help and a different diagnosis could be needed.
What to tell us when you call
Tell us the vehicle make, model and approximate year, whether it uses a conventional key or push-button start, and exactly what happens when you try to start it. Mention if the vehicle has been parked for a long time, if the lights were left on, or if a battery warning appeared while driving.
Share your precise pickup point or a nearby landmark and explain whether the vehicle is in an underground car park, on a busy road or in another difficult-to-access place. This helps determine what equipment and technician access may be required.
What happens during roadside assistance
The technician should confirm the vehicle and assess whether an external jump-start procedure is appropriate. Some vehicles have designated jump points or manufacturer-specific instructions; the technician must follow the applicable procedure and avoid unsuitable connections.
If the vehicle starts, the next step is not simply to assume everything is fixed. Battery condition and basic charging performance may need to be checked using supported equipment. A battery that repeatedly goes flat may require replacement or further electrical inspection.
Jump start or replacement battery?
A battery discharged by an accidentally left-on light may be usable after charging and testing. An aged or internally damaged battery may start after a jump but fail again at the next stop. Testing helps distinguish these situations, although a single roadside test may not identify every intermittent fault.
If replacement is appropriate, we can discuss mobile battery availability and the correct vehicle specification. We do not recommend purchasing a replacement based only on the fact that the engine did not start once.
Important precautions
Do not repeatedly attempt to crank an engine if you notice smoke, a burning smell, damaged wiring or a visibly swollen or leaking battery. Avoid connecting unknown jump-start equipment yourself if you are unfamiliar with the vehicle procedure.
Hybrid and electric vehicles may have a separate 12-volt system and special manufacturer instructions. Do not assume the same procedure applies to every model. Tell us the exact vehicle details before dispatch.
